This is my croft! A croft is a small area of land where you grow crops, and perhaps raise a few animals, but it's not big enough to be called a farm. Crofting is a reminder of how most people lived hundreds of years ago, in simpler times. Today, crofts only survive in remote rural areas - like the Highlands and Islands of Scotland. It's a great way to live, but it's a lot of hard work. See for yourself:

Most of these photos were taken in winter 2003, about a year after we first moved in, so there's not much happening and not much greenery. This year (2005) we aim to take some more photos in the summer, so you can see how things have changed.

Inside the small barn, where the smaller animals go during bad weather.

The barn, the chickens, and the edge of the pond. Our dog, Holly, gets on well with the chickens, but if they run she loves to chase them - then she doesn't know what to do when they stop running!

The pond, home to ducks, geese, and passing birds.

Growing the herbs.

The field of pasture, waiting for the pigs to turn it into mud again. In the background you can see the larger fields where we keep the cows, horses, and water buffalo.

My little garden with the wishing well.

An irrigation ditch. There is always more work to be done!

We'll never get rich with prices like these! But it's a wonderful life. I wouldn't give it up for anything.

After a year of hard work, this is Graham (my
husband) with the first crop.
Things are finally moving in the croft. Watch this space!
